Fielder’s Indifference

by Geoff Rachor | 26th May 2010

Human Rain DelayWhen I was approached to write for Pitch To the Rhino, my first thought was… well, basically I just laughed.  Toby was asking me to work on a social media/sports hybrid website which he and his two partners believe is the first of its kind.  The irony of this was and still is staggering.  Not only do I think that social media is the scourge of the Internet, I generally find most of it to be self-serving and egocentric.

However, the thought of writing in this space truly intrigued me, even though I still haven’t completely gotten past what I have been tasked to do.

Over the coming days, months and hopefully years, I will be filling this space with the yang to the PTTR’s yin.  As much as I dislike it (truly, as in, with a *passion*), social media has become entrenched in our society at a lighting fast pace and shows no sign of slowing down.  My existence on this site is to bring the social media explosion in sports back to the center; to shed light on why we should tread lightly (if at all) in some areas while exploring others.

You will NOT see a single “hashtag,” “@,” or any sort of link to twitter on this page.   You will not see me sharing sports stories/experiences in real time with you.  You will not see me on Twitter.  Ever.  Hopefully what you will see is enough yang to help you make better social media decisions.  It’s a brave new world and people are chomping at the bit to dive in with both feet.  Just know that I’m going to be the one warning you not to dive into the shallow end of the pool.

Between this column and the next I will be taking an insider’s tour of Qwest Stadium in Seattle.  Don’t expect me to tell you a damn thing about it using social media.  If you want to know what it was like, give me a call.

Until next time – the tarp’s on the field.  Looks like rain……

I too have been dragged kicking and screaming into the social media world. It is as you say self serving but with such a captive audience it is hard to find a single flaw in Pitch to The Rhino game play.
